A race is underway by big and small operators as the world is transformed by the use of  artificial intelligence (AI).

The data centers to store and process AI run 24-7. They are likely to pull generation from a variety of sources, including alternative resources and from natural gas. And power generation consumption also could evolve as evolving technology improves efficiencies.

Kearl outlined the findings from his recently completed analysis about the expected supply and demand expectations. In the base case, installed data center capacity would increase by 14 GW from 2023 to 2030. That translates to 2 Bcf/d of incremental natural gas demand – if the new facilities are fully served by gas-fired generation.

Believing that transparent markets empower businesses, economies and communities, NGI – which publishes daily, weekly and monthly natural gas indexes at pricing points across North America – works to provide natural gas price transparency for the Americas. NGI’s Hub & Flow podcast is a part of that effort.
