NGI’s Proposed Natural Gas Price Index Changes to Take Effect September 1, 2024

Natural Gas Intelligence (NGI), a leading Price Reporting Agency (PRA) covering the North American natural gas market since 1981, has successfully completed its annual audit for 2023 pertaining to the processes and procedures for compiling NGI’s Daily, Weekly and Monthly (Bidweek) natural gas price indexes.

In our continuing effort to stay ahead of the changes in physical flows of the North American natural gas market, Natural Gas Intelligence has implemented the previously announced January 1, 2024, changes to its Natural Gas Price Index tables. In our continuing effort to stay ahead of changes in the physical flows of the North American natural gas market, particularly those in the U.S. Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountains regions, Natural Gas Intelligence (NGI) will amend the spot market price tables that appear in NGI’s various data services by adding three (3) new locations and making changes to six (6) existing indexes. All changes, which were first proposed on October 1, 2023, will go into effect January 1, 2024, one month later than previously proposed.

Natural gas futures were higher on Monday after the weekend models showed hot weather returning to the Lower 48 following the Labor Day holiday. After soaring to a $2.695 intraday high, the September Nymex gas futures contract settled at $2.579/MMBtu, up 3.9 cents from Friday’s settlement. October futures edged up only eight-tenths of a cent to $2.665.

Natural gas futures started the week on strong footing, supported in part by a hot late-August forecast and the potential for a material decline in the storage surplus. The September Nymex gas futures contract settled Monday at $2.725/MMBtu, up 14.8 cents from Friday.
